Gov. David Paterson, speaking on an Albany radio news show this hour, said he’s not planning any tax hikes or layoffs of state workers to help get New York out of its fiscal crisis.  But, he added, “I’m not ruling out anything because I don’t know what the future holds.â€
The governor has called lawmakers back into session next month to cut an additional $2 billion out of this year’s state budget. State officials will have to make cuts in next year’s budget without raising taxes, Paterson said. Budget officials are anticipating a budget gap of $8 billion next year.
The governor said he’s not trying to be all gloom and doom; he’s just trying to forewarn the public. “I’d like people to be prepared for what we’re in for, for what we’re going to face,†he said.
