After getting a portion of the nominating votes from many states, Sen. Hillary Clinton put an end to a roll call several minutes ago by asking for the rules to be suspended and for Sen. Barack Obama to be nominated by affirmation of two-thirds of the delegates at the Democratic National Convention in Denver. Although she suspended her campaign for president, Clinton has continued to get support from Democrats around the country, and party officials have been concerned about an appearance of a divided party. Â
Clinton, who voiced her support for Obama during a prime-time speech at the convention last night, said he should be nominated “in the spirit of unity,” and “with eyes firmly fixed on the future.”
When prompted by Nancy Pelosi, speaker of the House of Representatives, the crowd cheered for Obama’s nomination. Members of the New York delegation chanted, “Hill-a-ry.” Delegates were notified a few minutes later that he had accepted the nomination. After that, “Love Train,” a hit O’Jays song from the 70s, blared out in the packed convention hall.
New York Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, D-Manhattan, introduced Clinton. He was flanked by numerous political luminaries in the state, including Gov. David Paterson and U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer, and he gave “shout outs” to Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli, Attorney General Andrew Cuomo and others.
