Assembly Minority Leader James Tedisco, who leads a small contingent of Republicans in the chamber, announced today he’s running for reelection. The Schenectady resident has served as GOP leader since 2005 and is seeking his 14th term this fall. His district covers parts of Schenectady and Saratoga counties.
There are several dozen Republicans in the Assembly, compared to more than 100 Democrats, making it difficult for the GOP to get things accomplished. Nevertheless, Tedisco has been vocal on issues like reducing gas taxes and implementing a property-tax cap. He received national media attention in opposing former Gov. Eliot Spitzer’s plan to give illegal aliens drivers’ licenses, which ultimately was defeated.
“This fight, our fight, is not finished – we have begun to see some positive change in how Albany works, but there is still too much dysfunction, partisanship and influence from the special interests. State government still spends, taxes and borrows too much. Our state deficit and debt are ticking time bombs that will only be diffused through a return to fiscal accountability,” he said in a statement.
