Assembly may have going-away gift for NYC mayor

July
9

While some New York City business leaders are already moaning about the impending end (Dec. 31, 2009) of Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s eight-year reign at City Hall, he won’t be missed by many Assembly Democrats, who found him overbearing and condescending at times.  And they may have a going-away present for the departing mayor.

Next year, authorization for the mayor to run New York City schools (as opposed to district school boards) expires. Although Bloomberg has gotten generally high marks for his tenure in charge of education in the city, some lawmakers recall harsh words from him during fights for a new sports stadium on the West Side of Manhattan and congestion pricing in the borough’s business district earlier this year. Both ideas died in the Assembly.

“I wouldn’t say it’s a sure thing,’’ one aide said, speaking of the chances of the mayor’s control of schools being extended beyond next year.
