Honking against the price of fuel

June
19

dscf0568.JPG   Truck drivers have arrived in Albany, and they’re honking their horns in unison as part of their protest against fuel prices. They don’t have trailers attached, and most vehicles are flying multiple American flags. A number of onlookers are clapping as they drive by. Police are hard at work trying to control regular traffic and point truck drivers in the right direction.

Senate Majority Leader Joseph Bruno, R-Brunswick, Rensselaer County, is scheduled to speak to the truckers at 11 a.m. on the steps of the Capitol. The Senate, which is controlled by Republicans, is in favor of suspending the state gas tax this summer to relieve gas prices, but the Democrat-led Assembly is not. Gov. David Paterson has said he would not sign legislation unless it could guarantee that the price of gas would go down.   dscf0573.JPG

According to AAA, the average price of a gallon of gasoline in New York is $4.29, compared with $5.13 for a gallon of diesel. The national average is $4.07 for a gallon of gas and $4.79 for diesel. Last year, those figures were $3.00 and $2.90, respectively.
