Resign? Gov. tells SUNY trustee no way

  Despite a resignation letter to the contrary, former New York Comptroller H. Carl McCall remains on the State University of New York’s Board of Trustees. He is scheduled to lead a meeting of SUNY’s Finance Committee, which he chairs, at 9 a.m. Tuesday, according to a spokesman for the 64-campus system. (One of the main issues to be discussed is how the cuts in state funding to SUNY will affect programs and campuses.) Â
  McCall, who was appointed to the board in October 2007, faxed his resignation letter May 13 to Gov. David Paterson, but the governor rejected it. McCall is staying, a spokesman for the governor said today. Former Gov. Eliot Spitzer nominated McCall, a New York City Democrat who was state comptroller from May 1993 to December 2002. Â
   ”I believe that with your continued support, SUNY’s mission of providing quality education and economic advancement to the people of New York will be greatly enhanced,” McCall wrote in the letter. ”I am certain that your leadership will produce significant opportunities and enriched services and benefits to all of our citizens.”
