Is Giuliani Plotting To Take Over State GOP?

June
6

On the heels of a report today that Rudy Giuliani may be pushing his top advisor to be the next head of the state GOP, some Republicans see the move as a plot by Giuliani to help pay off his $3 million presidential campaign debt.giuliani.jpg

“He’d have a platform from which to be able to do that much more easily,” one Republican source said of the possibility of his top aide Anthony Carbonetti becoming state GOP chairman.

Giuliani is about $3 million in the hole after his failed presidential bid, and he’s been telling Republicans that he’ll only do fund raisers for them if they help him pay off his debt, according to a source.

The potential Giuliani move comes as other Republicans leaders are looking to Rep. Thomas Reynolds, R-Clarence, Erie County, to take over for current GOP chairman Joseph Mondello.

Reynolds met recently with New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg to discuss the issue, but another Republican source said Reynolds wouldn’t take the job.

“He’s not doing it,” the source said.
