The state Legislature is expected to pass a 2008-09 budget today. Here’s some of the way you’ll be paying for their largess, which will be a $121.7 billion spending plan that increases spending by nearly 5 percent.
– $20 surcharge on most traffic violations.
– $170 surcharge for driving while drunk or under the influence of drugs.
– Increase in surcharge for being convicted from $250 to $300 for a felony, from $140 to $175 for misdemeanors and from $75 to $95 for violations.
– Hike in maximum penalties for some violations of the public-health law from $2,000 to $10,000.
– Additional $70 million tax on health insurers, to a total of $920 million.
– A $300 fee for an application to apply pesticides extended for three years.
– Additional $30 charge for drivers’ licenses and non-driver IDs that can be used to board airplanes and cross the Canadian border.
– Increase in fee for criminal-history searches from $52 to $55.
