The state Board of Regents just announced that 750,000 people in 47 professions licensed by the agency—including physicians, dentists, nurses, accountants, architects and pharmacists—can renew their registration online. Professionals have to renew licenses every three years, except physicians and medical physicists, who have to do it every two years. The Education Department handles 250,000 paper registration applications annually.
There will be a cost savings in the form of reduced staff time to process paper renewals (including overtime), and a reduction in paper, printing and postage costs. Another benefit, according to the department, is it will prevent incomplete applications and will make registration more convenient because the system will be up 24 hours a day, seven days a week. It takes 15 minutes, and licensees can pay with credit cards. The system is secure, the Education Department said.
