Soares asks Paterson for ‘Troopergate’ documents

March

An aide to Albany County District Attorney David Soares has asked Gov. David Paterson to waive any claims of executive privilege to documents surrounding the ‘Troopergate’’ scandal.

“The public has expressed great interest in this matter and we believe the people of the State of New York and the County of Albany have a right to a full airing of the events surrounding this case,’‘Assistant District Attorney Linda Griggs said in a letter to Paterson dated Monday.

Soares has been investigating since last August whether any laws were broken by a plot by former Spitzer administration officials to discredit Senate Majority Leader Joseph Bruno by gathering and releasing information about his state-funded travels.

Paterson’s top aide, Charles O’Byrne, today asked Attorney General Andrew Cuomo for an opinion about whether Paterson can release the information.

Cuomo is working to set up a meeting with Soares, the Commission on Government Integrity and the Senate Investigations Committee to resolve the issue, Cuomo spokesman John Milgrim said.

Soares wanted an answer by 5 p.m. today, but  no meeting was held before then.

It was unclear why Soares sees such urgency in getting the records. Spokeswoman Heather Orth wouldn’t comment, other than to say that Soares hopes to issue his “Troopergate’’ report by the end of the month.
