View from across the pond

Eliot Spitzer doesn’t have many defenders in New York, but the United Kingdom-based Economist Magazine had a different take on the situation this week.
”…the whole affair is a crock of nonsense, ‘’ the magazine said in an opinion column. “What business is it of the federal government what Mr. Spitzer got up to in Room 871 of the Mayflower Hotel in Washington, D.C.?’’
That’s the room where Spitzer allegedly met a prostitute on the night of Feb. 13. His resignation takes effect at noon today, and he potentially faces criminal charges connected to the tryst.
Prostitution, the magazine pointed out, is “activity as old as human society,’’ and suggests that federal investigators focus on more serious matters, “such as looking for terrorists.’’
The magazine expressed frustration with what it sees as the United States’ unfortunate combination of “puritanism’’ and a legal system “that is out of control.’’
It was Spitzer’s misfortune, perhaps, to have been a politician on this side of the pond.
