Is It The Licenses?

November
6

If Republicans are looking for proof that the drivers’ license debate in New York may hurt Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton’s presidential bid, they could have some evidence in a new Marist College poll today.

The Marist poll found that Clinton maintains a strong lead against her Democratic opponents, yet her support among likely Democratic primary voters slipped after last week’s contentious presidential debate.

Clinton has 48 percent of the Democratic vote nationwide, compared to Illinois Sen. Barack Obama who receives 17 percent followed by John Edwards with 10 percent.

But a comparison of interviews completed before and after last week’s Democratic debate reveals that Clinton’s support among Democratic primary voters was 52 percent before the debate and 43 percent after the debate, the Marist poll found.

Clinton was hammered for not taking a strong stance on whether she supports Gov. Spitzer’s plan to offer drivers’ licenses to illegal immigrants. Clinton said she understands Spitzer’s policy decision because of a failed immigration policy on the national level.

On the Republican side, former New York CIty Mayor Rudy Giuliani leads Arizona Sen. John McCain 30 percent to 17 percent.  Former Governor Mitt Romney is in third place with 13 percent and 12 percent for former Tennessee Sen. Fred Thompson.
