No answer from Senate Dem leader
How to make a politician uneasy: As Senate Minority Leader Malcolm Smith today was making his pitch for lawmakers to stay in town as long as it takes to finish their work, New York Daily News reporter Joe Mahoney asked him if he had talked over the idea first with Gov. Eliot Spitzer. Mahoney pointed out that Senate Dems withdrew their support for a legislative pay-raise bill earlier this year at Spitzer’s behest. Smith first ignored the question, blurting out some more comments about how lawmakers should stay in town, so Mahoney asked it again. “Why is that relevant?’’ Smith askedin reply, again not answering. So how independent are Senate Dems of Spitzer? Smith, apparently, will never tell.
