Spitzers made just under $2 million last year

April

2006 was not a bad year for Eliot Spitzer. Not only was he elected governor last year, but he increased his earnings by almost $650,000 as well, according to his tax returns that were made public today.

Spitzer and his wife, Silda Wall, reported earning $1.97 million last year, up from $1.35 million in 2005.

The bulk of the income, $1.4 million, was from commercial rental properties in Manhattan the new governor owns in a partnership with his father, brother and sister. A big hike in rental income was the biggest factor in the income jump.

Spitzer’s attorney-general salary last year was essentially small change: $145,916. Interest income of just under $500,000 was far higher.

The Spitzers paid 39 percent of that total, or almost $769,000 in income taxes, divided among federal ($561,216) state ($130,829) and New York City ($69,461.)

They gave away 7 percent of their income, or $141,974, including $10,000 to Children for Children, the non-profit organization Silda Wall runs that helps to establish connections between affluent and low-income children in New York City. She gets no salary for that job.

Statewide elected officials aren’t required to disclose their tax returns, but the governor, lieutenant governor, comptroller and attorney general do. No word on when the others will make their returns available. DEadline for filing them is midnight Tuesday.

The legislative leaders, Speaker Sheldon Silver of Manhattan and Senate Majority Leader Joseph Bruno, don’t make their returns public.
